Conservation of West Gate – Jorawargarh, Jhunjhunu

Description

In 2022, Sarvrakshan Foundation undertook the conservation of the Western Gate of Jorawargarh Fort in Jhunjhunu, commissioned by Shri Jorawar Jan Kalyan Nyas. This gate holds both architectural and historical significance, featuring a marble plaque commemorating the departure of 14,000 soldiers from the Shekhawati region for the First World War—of whom over 2,000 were martyred. This poignant monument is a rare, enduring testimony to the region’s contribution to global history.

Before beginning physical conservation, the project involved detailed research, archival study, material analysis, and photographic documentation. Restoration work focused on structural reinforcement, lime plaster repairs, and aesthetic revival—carried out using traditional techniques and materials to maintain historical integrity.

Local community members played an integral role, contributing knowledge, craftsmanship, and logistical support. Their active participation turned the project into a model of community-led heritage stewardship. Today, the restored gate stands as a symbol of collective memory, resilience, and cultural pride.
