Documentation of the Murals of Rajasthan
Description
A long-term, flagship initiative of Sarvrakshan Foundation, the Documentation of the Murals of Rajasthan is dedicated to recording and preserving one of the state’s most visually and culturally significant yet endangered art forms. Found across rock shelters, havelis, temples, stepwells, and forts, these murals embody centuries of artistic expression, storytelling, and regional identity.
Recognising the urgent need for preservation, the Foundation has undertaken extensive fieldwork—including site surveys, high-resolution photographic documentation, condition assessments, and oral history collection. The project actively engages local artisans, caretakers, and cultural historians to ensure a contextual understanding of the artworks and revive traditional knowledge systems.
This ongoing endeavour reflects our deep commitment to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage through research, awareness, and conservation planning—ensuring these mural traditions continue to inspire and educate future generations.
